More photos of the Razer Switchblade Intel Oak Trail concept device

IMG_7671

It's just an unnamed Intel Oak Trail concept device at Intel's CES booth that's said to be transforming into a slider before its release, but over at Razer's booth the 7" clamshell running Windows 7 and widening everyone's eyes with its adaptive keyboard is known as the Switchblade.

Samsung Galaxy Tab display set up in LVCC lobby

IMG_7649

As if a large display with at least 20 working models at the Samsung booth inside the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) weren't enough, the Galaxy Tab had its own sub-booth in the grand lobby between the Central and North Halls.

There are 4 fully functional Tabs out here between the Samsung mobile charging stations and Nathan's, the hot dog place. Grab a bite to eat, charge your gadgets, play with a Tab. What else are CES attendees supposed to do on their lunch break?

Even though newer and more powerful Android tablets are on display at CES this year, the Tab is still getting plenty of attention. I brought mine to the show today for size comparison purposes (e.g., Tab vs Dell Streak 7), but I saw a few in the wild being used for email and web browsing.

A look inside ShowStoppers at CES 2011

ShowStoppers is another popular press event held during CES that includes more than 100 exhibitors showing off their latest products to the bloggers, analysts, and other members of the media. It's four hours of food, conversations with gadget folk, and all kinds of swag.

Have a look at what ShowStoppers 2011 was all about below.

Samsung Q1 Ultra being used for surveys at Intel booth

Q1u-intel2011

The days of being able to visit the Intel booth at CES to see a wall of new UMPCs and MIDs may be over, but a second-generation "classic" was still present at this year's show. In exchange for a few minutes of your time, Intel reps were handing out $5 Starbucks gift cards after you answered some questions and completed a survey stored on a Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC.

Out of all the hardware the company has at its disposal, it's interesting that they chose to use a stylus-driven device from 3.5 years ago.

Android mascot poses at Rockchip booth

Most Rockchip-powered devices we've seen last year have been running Android and there's a sign at the booth about how the company's RK2818 chip is well suited for Froyo, so it's no wonder that Andy the Android mascot feels right at home here.

Rockchip showing off MIDs at CES 2011

This is one of the first times I've seen the MID acronym on display at CES 2011. Everywhere you look are tablets, smartphones, and TVs, so it's nice to see our old MID friend making an appearance at Rockchip's booth. Most of the products don't have names and there, of course, many slates here but I'm still glad to see those three letters.

Sharp Galapagos 3D screens use Parallax Barrier method

I don't know how practical 3D screens on phones really are, but they're definitely something that you would want to show off. The Sharp Galapagos device from SoftBank that I'm looking at is attracting a lot of attention here. According to the display, the Parallax Barrier method being used "separates the pixels on the LCD to show each eye the different image to generate a stereoscopic 3D image." It's a sight to see, to be sure, but probably not something I would want to look at all day.

More time with the Viliv X70 Windows 7 slate

IMG_7441

After my brief affair with the Viliv X70 Windows 7 slate yesterday, I was eager to meet with the device again today and get a feel for what it was really all about, especially since it's been confirmed to have the new 1.5GHz Intel Oak Trail processor nestled inside its ultra slim 14.3mm body.

Viliv Media Tablet Phone isn't what we were expecting

IMG_7445

Considering that "Media Tablet Phone" was only mentioned in an email and not on Viliv's official CES teaser, I guess we should have known not to expect a phone version of the company's P3 Prime or anything similar.

But who could have guessed that it would end up being the upcoming X7 Android tablet with some video and VoIP technologies mixed in and an optional DECT or Wi-Fi handset on the side?

UbiSurfer-Touch Android tablet includes 12 months of free wireless internet

IMG_7476

You remember the DataWind PocketSurfer2, right?

Then meet its cousin, the UbiSurfer-Touch. It's got a 7" screen, Android 2.2, a Cortex A8 processor, 256MB RAM, 1GB flash memory, "patented data compression/acceleration technology," a "full MS compatible office suite," and an assortment of ports that include an SD card slot and mic/headphone jacks. What makes this device really interesting, though, is that it starts at $249 and includes 12 months of internet service via its "embedded cellular modem." There's no monthly data plan, no activation fee, and no other hidden fees associated with the service.
