NVIDIA promising $99 Tegra-powered MIDs
A few days ago, there was a story on CNET Taiwan's Crave blog that NVIDIA was expected to announce a new class of mobile internet devices at MWC in Barcelona this week. Google's translation wasn't entirely coherent, but it was easy enough to make out that the Tegra 600 Series, Windows CE, and what is presumably a carrier-subsidized $99 price tag would somehow all be involved.
I didn't know what to make of it at the time, as a $99 MID sounded highly improbable and completely made up, but it looks like my skepticism got the better of me. Because according to Engadget and their photo gallery, the device is theoretically very real (oxymoron, anyone?) and would feature "unprecedented multimedia functionality" and "10x the power efficiency of [the] competition" (via product pages).
The first Tegra 600 devices are supposedly on track to begin shipping in mid-2009.
