TG turns Lluon Mobbit MID into UMPC with Windows XP

Although I am beginning to accept that mobile device categories will never be concretely defined or correctly used across the board, I can't help but wonder whether a Windows operating system and faster CPU are truly all it takes for an Intel MID to become a UMPC. Originally, Intel MIDs were "supposed to" have 800MHz Atom Z500 processors, Linux OSs, and small (4GB/8GB) flash drives. That "rule" was broken when the UMID MID came along last month, and today it got trampled by Korea-based TG's Lluon Mobbit, a 13.2-ounce slate featuring a 1.33GHz Atom Z520 CPU, Windows XP Home, 30GB hard drive (16GB SSD option), and 4.8-inch 1024 x 600 touchscreen.

If it weren't for the use of the MID term on TG's website, I would've taken one look at the 6.5" x 3.5" x 0.8" device and pointed at it in court when asked to identify all the UMPCs in the room.

Whether a mobile device is technically a MID or a UMPC doesn't really matter, of course, but I was a publications and copy editor in my pre-Pocketables life, so I've taken the Stickler Oath and am big on correctness.

I mean, despite the finger-friendly UI that sits on top of XP and looks like this:

the Lluon Mobbit MID is a UMPC not unlike the Kohjinsha SC3 or Willcom D4, which both have the same CPU, chipset, and RAM under their hoods.

Just press the Windows icon and voila!

You're looking at plain ole Windows XP.

Anyway, MID or UMPC, the Lluon Mobbit is unlikely to see a release outside of Korea. And if it does, look for it under TG's global brand, Averatec.
