Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 preorder pricing
Now that this year's release of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 has been reconfirmed, it's time to start saving for it. But how much is enough to guarantee that you'll be among the first to publicly unbox the 3G Windows Mobile slider?
Well, that all depends on where you preorder. Because while Sony Ericsson hasn't revealed official (subsidized) pricing, many retailers are already accepting preorders at prices they say are considerably lower than retail.
MobileCityOnline, for example, has the X1 unlocked for $999, a full $200 off their $1199 retail price. This is a steal when compared to WirelessGalaxy, who's got the regularly priced $1500 X1 on sale for $1428, but not quite as good as Smart Mobile Gadgets' very specific $979.94. And it definitely doesn't hold a candle to CellHUT, whose own $200 savings bring the price of an unlocked XPERIA X1 down to a mere $699. And for those of you across the pond, Clove Technology's £395 looks to be the price to beat.
Whatever it costs, I'm using my Bush rebate check (PDF) to get one.

Sony must have the worst marketing team in the world. To sell a product, you don't announce it a year before its finished and show concept videos/images of what the device 'should' do when they are finished with it. *sigh*

I'm naively hoping the reconfirmed release date of the "second half of this year" means July 2008. I don't think people will be too pleased if they have to wait until December 31!
Since it could be out as early as July, though, a five-month wait isn't too bad. I'm just crossing my fingers that it doesn't take the same route as the HTC Shift.

I'd be very surprised if the X1 came out before october, if at all... actually I wouldn't be surprised if the release date gets pushed back.
The reason for announcing a product such as this one in advance is to start generating hype and expectation... and to slow down your competitor's momentum. I don't think it is a bad strategy at all. The X1 was the star of the MWC. The thing is... they better live up to the hype they generate or it will turn on them.
As to the price... Cellhut's $699 sounded like a very good one. Current top-of-the-line smartphones like the i-mate ultimates, tytn2 and nokia e90 all cost close to $900. Even the toshiba G900, which is a year old or so, is still going for close to $700. MSRP on the X1 is most likely going to be around $1000.
Cellhut must have figured this out too, because they have now raised their price to $899.
These are all pretty hefty price tags too. At what point do we start paying more for our mobile phone than for our laptops? We seem to be headed in that direction.
