Samsung to release budget Q1 Ultra in UK

Samsung_logo_08I'm not convinced that the split keypad and slate-style form factor of the Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC would appeal to the same audience fawning over the Asus Eee PC mini notebook, but an "education-focused" Ultra with a smaller hard drive and no cameras is heading for the UK in the next few weeks with hopes that it will. Priced at £399, the pared down Q1 Ultra (model name currently unknown) will be Samsung's first shot at combating the "Eee effect."

There's no mention of the processor so far, but the price point makes it pretty clear that the upcoming unit won't have the same internals as the Q1 Ultra Premium. It will be running Vista, though.

I do not think either device is really that popular nor what the larger mass market really wants. I am shocked not one company has yet to utilize the UMPC technology in a jacket size clamshell form factor that resembled the HPC's back in the 1990's. That shape makes a lot more sense functionally. If you make a computer that is smaller than a laptop wouldn't you want it small enough to carry in a jacket pocket so you could have it everywhere? Also when has ever the mass population cried out for any computer that is full windows where the input is anthing else but a touch type keyboard? Never. To me the power of UMPC technology is the ability to finally put full windows in a small enough size to carry and use functionally everywhere without needing a bag or purse.
