Samsung P2 Bluewave firmware adds new Bluetooth features

The first of several Bluewave firmware updates planned for the Samsung P2 digital media player has recently been made available at the company's download center. And what an update it is!

Version 2.08 of the MTP-based US firmware delivers on earlier promises of extensive Bluetooth functions by enabling the P2 to 1) make/receive phone calls when paired with a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone and 2) transfer files between the P2 and other Bluetooth devices (e.g., another P2, phones, computers).

Update 2.1.08: Bluewave 2 firmware version 3.07 now available

A pair of headphones and the P2's built-in microphone allow users to make and answer calls with their phones still tucked away in a pocket or bag.

In addition to the new Bluetooth capabilities, the firmware:

  • modifies the icons used in the Cosmos menu (they look more 3D and glass-like now)
  • adds an address book that can be populated with contacts received via Bluetooth from a mobile phone
  • adds AAC support
  • enlarges album art and visualizations during music playback
  • improves touchscreen sensitivity and responsiveness

The Korean firmware also includes a bilingual dictionary and virtual keyboard.

This is the most substantial firmware upgrade I've ever seen from any company for any product. With at least two more Bluewave updates already planned for release in the coming months, the Samsung P2 could certainly become a major player in 2008.

Check out more details and some user experiences of the new firmware at YJzone.net and Head-Fi. And if you haven't already, please take a look at my full Samsung P2 review.

Thanks, Utew!

I was ready to spend some bucks on an ipod-touch last friday and checked ebay for a cheap one. I found a nice deal and was ready to place my bid. Out of couriosity however, i opened a new tab and went to bestbuy.com to search for any nice new mp3 players, just prior to my bid. Wow...I scrolled down to see what would become my very own new music player. I read so many good reviews on the p2, I decided to go to my local Best Buy that same day and purchase it. I've had it for nearly 3 days now and I cant see why this isnt killing ipod sales! The p2 is awesome! The firmware updates make it a very worthwhile purchase compared to what others have to offer. No wifi but lots of other neat features to keep me happy.

This player really has some potential with the Bluewave firmware updates, i just hope they dont stop.

3 Really isn't enough. I want them to do more and more.

If samsung listened to user requests, this player is unstoppable apart from hardware limitations

This first bluewave firmware update has been rather stellar in scope, IMO. More to come and we'll see what Sammy can do for the YP-P2 it terms of added features/functions.

Nice report once again, Jenn.. you nailed it! Not that you ever miss a tick. Always a pleasure reading your ever-informative reviews.=)

Thanks for the mention of YJzone.NET too, the P2 has become a rather fond item for us..and we have a great group of P2 owners that love their players. =)

You can call with your MP3 player while your cellphone with turned on Bluetooth is still in your pocket - Fascinating!

When this pretty device had WLAN and an Internet Browser included, it'll be the almost-perfect-allround-DAP!

very nice, i love how samsung is adding so much to an already great player with their bluewave updates...

Yes i agreed, i hope Samsung reads this Thread and do something add new futures to this very good media player.

I was calling people from the my YP-P2 today it was hot!! and my friend had his Ipod Touch, he was still jealous. jajajaja

Okay help. I bought the P2 yesterday. And I installed the firmware 2.08 off of the samsung site.. my phone is now fucked its got about 6 languages intermingled. is there anyway on gods green earth to get rid of this jibberish that has gotten its way into my phone?

Yes, a notepad would be a welcome addition, and give it basic PDA features that would be a huge bonus for students like me, who don't need a fancy PDA, just basic organizational tools.

What do i do when im done downloading Firmware v3.07 ?
