Sony Vaio UX series: At a glance

Until Sony overhauls the design of its UX series of micro PCs to make telling them apart a bit easier, I hope the following chart (last updated 03.27.08) will help to keep everything straight.

I've tried to make the chart as accurate and complete as possible by cross-checking with Sony press releases and product pages, but it's still a work in progress.

Similarities

The Vista models are said to have a slightly different keyboard, but otherwise all of the units are aesthetically identical. They all measure 5.91”(W) x 3.74”(H) x 1.27-1.50”(D) and feature a 4.5" SVGA (1024 x 600) touch screen, USB 2.0 port, DC-in, port replicator connector, headphone and microphone jacks, Memory Stick DUO slot, biometric fingerprint sensor, front (1.3 MP) and rear (0.3 MP) cameras, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi (802.11b/g).

Differences

In addition to the specs listed below:

• All U.S. models have integrated WWAN (Cingular EDGE).
• All other models have a Compact Flash slot.
• All Japanese models (except the UX50) also have a 1Seg TV tuner and/or FeliCa card slot.
• Core 2 Solo Vista models have 251MB of video RAM, Core Solo Vista models have 224MB, and all XP models have 128MB.

Solid state drives (SSDs) are indicated in bold.

*The Japanese models are confusing because of the "VAIO Owner Made" service, which allows customers to mix and match a number of components. This, on its own, is fine, as many companies offer their computers in made-to-order configurations. The problem is that Sony Japan adds letters to the model numbers that don't always correspond to anything significant. For example, the UX91S and UX91NS, which make up the UX91 series, are both available with an identical set of customizable options (HDD or SSD, CPU, OS). Thus, they are essentially the same unit. The UX90 series is similarly problematic, as the UX90S, UX90PS, and UX90SSD are often used interchangeably.

For Canadians: UX380CN is often advertised with pictures clearly showing WWAN (EDGE) vertical antenna, but there is no such antenna on the unit, it does indeed come with a CF slot (as slow as it is).

This may have changed, but as of February 2007, the UX was not available in South Africa. Not directly from SonyStyle, anyway. You can see this here: http://www.pocketables.net/2007/02/sony_vaio_ux_ar.html

At the moment, the highest spec'd models are the UX380N (HDD) and UX390N (SSD) in the United States. You can find all the international equivalents in the chart.

Are the specs still the same today (the last message in this thread was on April 10)?

Why is the UX380N or UX390N rated as a higher spec than the UX91 or even UX1XN? Because the integrated WWAN through Cingular(/AT&T) Edge is much slower than a HSDPA/3G connection isn't it? (Isn't that a major criticism of the iPhone?)

And the ones with the integrated WWAN don't have the CF slots, right? The slot allows you to put a CF card and use the much faster AT&T 3G mobile broadband data network (and still allow them to use EDGE where the HSDPA is not available).

Also what modifications and upgrades are available and from whom? Are these not made available by Sony? (Even in Japan are they not done by Sony?)

I wish the integrated WWAN was 3G, because then I would just buy the US one even if it doesn't have a CF slot, what else would I use the slot for? Also, I wish I could read Japanese because I went to the Vaio Owner Made site and can't decipher it.

Yes, the specs are still the same.

Are the UX380N and UX390N considered as higher spec'd machines? They're the "best" models in the U.S. but are basically equivalent (except for the built-in WWAN) to the top-rated models in other regions.

Where are you located and which model in particular are you looking at? Aside from the Owner Made service in Japan, the only other way to get a slightly differently configured UX is to order one from Dynamism.

Hello,please anybody,I need some help.
I cracked the glass(plastic?)of the lcd of the SONY MICRO VGN-UX380N but everything else works fine.
I can still see everything,all the icons,the 2 cameras work fine,I just can't use the touch screen with the pen,so I am moving the cursor with the touch ball.
I called Sony and after 2 days,5 hours on the phone waiting,and talking with 8 different people 4 of them told me one thing,and the other 4 another.
4 of them told me that I am lucky and I only have to order the part'housing protection' number '268079602' that comes with the glass for only 11.75.
I was so happy,only for an hour,I ordered the part but when I called for a 5th opinion they told me that I have to change the whole panel for 450 plus the shipping and labor!
Please,anybody knows what I should do?
I just want to change this little piece of glass,can I just find this part,or it is attached with the whole panel,so I will have to buy the whole thing.
And if thats the case does anybody know if I cant find cheaper somehow from 450?
